J. R. Burkholder's life and work as ethicist, churchman, and social change agent spanned and influenced dramatic changes in twentieth-century Mennonite peace theology and ecumenical engagements. Prophetic Peacemaking is a collection of thirty of Burkholder's most prescient essays on pacifism, patriotism, public witness, Mennonite ethics, health care, stewardship, vocation, service, and other issues of authentic discipleship. These essays are not so much period pieces as reflections on faithful living relevant for future generations of peacemakers. A former Burkholder student, ethicist Keith Graber Miller edited the volume, providing an introduction "on being Burkholderian" and sketching the historical context for each chapter.
